Fused Glass - Intermediate | CM10GLS-Feb23 This class will be an opportunity for students who have basic glass working skills to develop or strengthen their own artistic statement while experimenting with advanced techniques. We will be working with molds to do glass casting; using frits to develop images employing the techniques of fritography; and making thick or deep glass. If time allows we will explore micas and using the airbrush. There might even be a surprise for students who have taken several glass classes! $200 Kitty Alcott is a fused glass artist living in Gatlinburg. She received her BA in Art from University of Florida and fused glass training at Arrowmont; member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild for glass and the Foothills Craft Guild in glass and pottery. Rings & Things | CM10JWL-Jan12 Learn to fabricate wearable and/or sculptural metalwork through the use of a variety of cold connections, soldering methods, or combinations of the two. Emphasis will be on texture and patina. Basics will be covered; including piercing, filing, soldering, texture, forming, and patina. $175 Victoria Altepeter is a resident artist at Arrowmont. She earned her MFA at Arizona State University with an emphasis in metals. She has taught metals classes at the college level and at art centers in Arizona. She actively exhibits her wearable and sculptural metalwork. Back to top |
Metalwork Surface Techniques | CM10MTL-Feb23 This course will explore a multitude of ways to affect the surface of your metalwork. We will cover marriage of metals, solder inlay, fusing, and textures through reticulation, acid etching, rolling mill, etc. A wide variety of patinas will be introduced to make these surfaces pop! Basic jewelry making technique/knowledge will be helpful; beginners are welcome. $175 Victoria Altepeter is a resident artist at Arrowmont. Exploration of Woodturning | CM10WDT-Jan12 This fun and informative class is a basic introduction to the woodturning process offering a good foundation for beginners. Those new to the lathe will gain confidence in their skills as they learn to create a wide variety of projects using primarily dry wood. Instruction on different tools and their uses, shop safety and basic finishing techniques will also be covered. $200 Erik Arensbak is a second generation craftsperson who is a member of the Arts & Crafts Community. Basic Ceramic Mould Making | CM10CLH-Jan12 Create your own personal assortment of unique ceramic adornments. Using the fundamentals of one-piece dropout and sprig moulds, create an original form to produce multiples/ duplicates of your own design. Also experiment with one-piece rubber moulds to create virtually seamless press moulds incorporating complex undercuts. Sounds complicated, but I promise it’s easy! Basic mould making is a perfect complement to any fundamental ceramic construction technique. Use skills learned in this class to advance your hand building and wheel throwing vocabulary, including simple secrets to creating dynamic decoration and form! $175 Thaddeus Erdahl is currently an Arrowmont Resident Artist who was raised in the small rural community of La Porte City, Iowa. He received his MFA in ceramics from the University of Florida, was a UF fellowship recipient and attended Think Tank III, a national arts in higher education symposium. Back to top |
Intro to Photography | CM10PTO-Feb23 Whether you use a film or digital camera, composition, exposure, and understanding light remain the same. Learn basic techniques to take your vision and turn it into a successful photograph. Become more comfortable with your camera by understanding how it sees your world. We will shoot a lot of images for class discussion and critique. We may schedule shooting trips to allow time in the field. This is a basic level class, but intermediate to advanced students may benefit as well. $175 Jill Greene is a commercial and nature photographer in Sevierville and is Arrowmont’s staff photographer. She studied photography at Nashville State Technical Institute. Her work is widely published throughout the Southeast. Back to top |

Photographing Your Artwork | CM10PTO-Jan12 You have created that beautiful piece of work and would like to have good images that represent you in the best possible way. Photography is about recognizing what light is doing and learning how to manipulate it to achieve the intended result. With a good quality camera and a few dollars invested at your local hardware and art supply store, you can achieve the results you are looking for. Whether you are working with film or digital, you should leave this class with the skills to produce a good quality image for reproduction. Students must provide their own cameras. Basic working knowledge of your camera is preferred. No point and shoot cameras, please. $175 Jill Greene is a commercial and nature photographer in Sevierville and is Arrowmont’s staff photographer. Potter’s Wheel | CM10CLY-Jan12 This class will focus on the making of functional objects on the potter’s wheel. Instruction will include all parts of the process, from wedging clay, throwing, and adding handles to decorating and glazing pots. As your skills advance, you will be encouraged to explore the use of the wheel as a tool for making a variety of parts to create composite forms and larger scale pieces. $175 Martina Lantin is currently an Arrowmont Resident Artist who was born in Montreal, Canada. Following her undergraduate studies, she developed her throwing skills in both England and Denmark and was also a production potter in Bermuda and Montana. She recently received her MFA from NSCAD University in Halifax, Canada. Back to top |
Tables, Tables, Tables | CM10WDW-Feb23 This course will focus on making smaller tables with unique surface embellishment. Any and all woodworking skill levels are welcome in this class; we will be starting with the basics but will quickly jump into the crafting of the table. Once the tables are built we will have a “no holds barred” session of surface design. There will be no wrong answer when it comes to how you achieve your desired look whether it is carving, painting, burning and so on. $200 Kent Perdue received a BFA in Crafts and Material Studies with a focus in woodworking and furniture design from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2009. He is interested in making furniture, jewelry and other sculptural forms using a wide variety of techniques and materials. Back to top |

Sculpting with Metal | CM10MTL-Jan12 In this fun, informative sculpture class, students will learn the basics of metal fabrication to create garden sculptures or small indoor pieces. Students are encouraged to bring in objects and materials that can be incorporated into their work. Introductory techniques such as brazing copper, and simple cutting, welding, fabrication, and finishing of steel will be covered. Students will need to bring some safety equipment such as an apron, safety goggles, leather gloves and lots of imagination! Limited to ten students. $175 Virginia McKinney is a full time studio artist and holds a BS in Art Education and Design from S.U.N.Y., Buffalo and an MA in Sculpture from Western Carolina University. A former Arrowmont Resident Artist, her work is exhibited in fine craft shows and galleries nationally. Back to top |
Woodturning - Intermediate | CM10WDT-Feb23 This woodturning class is geared for students who already have a grasp of the foundation skills and are looking to further hone their abilities. This class will focus on several different projects covering different skill sets including spindle, faceplate, and dry wood bowl turning. Precision turning and furniture type assembly will be stressed along with learning about different tools and basic finishing techniques. $200 Randy Ogle is a native of Gatlinburg and a third generation woodworker receiving training from his father and grandfather. He is owner of the Chair Shop in the Arts & Crafts Community of Gatlinburg, and a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild. Back to top |

Build a Feather Weight Canoe | CM10WDW-Jan12 This class will cover building a light-weight solo canoe from start to finish. The canoes being built will range from 8-10 feet and will weigh as little as nine pounds. These canoes achieve their lightness as a result of the lightweight framework and their Dacron covering. Techniques that will be used during the course include basic tool use including table saw, band saw, planer, miter saw and some hand tools. The materials that we will use are pine, oak and Dacron, a heat shrink fabric. The course will be fast paced and focused in order to complete the task of building your own personal solo canoe. $200 Kent Perdue received a BFA in Crafts and Material Studies with a focus in woodworking and furniture design from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2009. Basic Drawing & Painting Techniques | CM10DRW-Jan12 This class will focus on using a variety of pencil drawing and watercolor techniques, using the book Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, by Betty Edwards, as a reference. Students will learn skills to produce more accurate drawings, including the grid method to help visualize going from a three dimensional object or scene to a two dimensional sketch on paper. We will work from photos and still life objects in class, emphasizing value studies, exploring the subtle beauty of creating both pencil drawings and watercolor paintings. My goal is to nurture your creativity by opening up the world of line and color. No pressurejust fun. $150 Andrea Wilson is an award-winning artist in three different mediumswatercolor, printmaking and mixed media. Her main focus is detailed botanicals and other subjects inspired by nature. By embracing the details and frequently the imperfections of nature, her work offers a unique, creative perspective.
