Art Explorers | CD10MXM-Jan16 How to make a zero backwards, doing art in a wonderful new way! Painting, collage, green art, and sculpture. Each project will encourage students to see things freshly, as if for the first time. An exciting introduction to modern artists and to the imagination. Students will be amazed at what they can create! Grades: K-3 $95 Veronica L.H. Ludlow has a BFA in Sculpture from The University of TN and an Associate of Science Degree in Graphic Design. She has on-going studies in Great Britain and diversified experience as fiber artist, Artist in Residence, arts and crafts teacher, art coordinator, curator and demonstrator. Back to top |
Let’s Create Some Photographs | CD10PTO-Jan16 Focus on the fun side of photography by making unique one of-a-kind prints. Learn how to create prints in the darkroom without a negative. We will make Photograms using materials provided in class. We will also work outdoors using the sun as our light source to develop our images onto paper and cloth. Students must have a digital camera for this class. Grades: 6-12 $95 Jill Greene is a commercial and nature photographer in Sevierville and is Arrowmont’s staff photographer. She studied photography at Nashville State Technical Institute. Her work is widely published throughout the Southeast. Back to top |
Ceramic Animal Banks | CD10CLH-Jan16 There’s no time like the present to start saving your hard earned money and you might as well do it in style. Create your very own handmade Piggy (animal) bank. Learn tips and techniques to give your bank personality and characteristics that will help protect your financial investments. Grades: 2-6 $95 Thaddeus Erdahl is currently an Arrowmont Resident Artist who was raised in the small rural community of La Porte City, Iowa. He received his MFA in ceramics from the University of Florida, was a UF fellowship recipient and attended Think Tank III, a national arts in higher education symposium. Back to top |
Basics of Woodturning | CD10WDT-Jan16 Discover the excitement of a woodshop while exploring the basics of woodturning. Work on the lathe and use tools such as scrapers and bowl gouges. There will be a focus on the importance of shop safety as you develop skills to create basic bowls, plates and spindles. Demonstrations of proper finishing techniques will complete the class. Grades: 6-12 $95 Erik Arensbak is a second generation craftsperson who is a member of the Arts & Crafts Community. He has been woodturning and teaching for nine years at Arrowmont. Back to top |
Potter’s Wheel Basics | CD10CLY-Jan16 Experience the magic of the potter’s wheel as we learn to create thrown forms such as cups, bowls and more. Wheel and hand building techniques will be used to complete several projects. Students will also learn how to glaze their creations. Grades 3-12 $95 Martina Lantin is currently an Arrowmont Resident Artist who was born in Montreal, Canada. Following her undergraduate studies, she developed her throwing skills in both England and Denmark and was also a production potter in Bermuda and Montana. She recently received her MFA from NSCAD University in Halifax, Canada. Virginia McKinney is a full time studio artist and holds a BS in Art Education and Design from S.U.N.Y., Buffalo and an MA in Sculpture from Western Carolina University. A former Arrowmont Resident Artist, her work is exhibited in fine craft shows and galleries nationally. Back to top |
Manipulating Metal | CD10MTL-Jan16 Explore forming and fabrication, and everything in between! Create different objects using basic forming skills, and embellish these with soldered and riveted elements, textures and patina. We will cover piercing, filing and finishing, texture, forming, patina, and learn to join metal. Beginners and those with previous experience are sure to have fun and learn something new. Grades 7-12 $95 Victoria Altepeter is a resident artist at Arrowmont. She earned her MFA at Arizona State University with an emphasis in metals. She has taught metals classes at the college level and at art centers in Arizona. She actively exhibits her wearable and sculptural metalwork. Back to top |
Glass Fusing | CD10GLS-Jan16 Learn the foundations of glass fusing while exploring different techniques to create fun, colorful fused glass projects from transparent, opaque and iridescent glasses. Emphasis will also be placed on learning about studio safety, equipment and glass types, providing a great foundation in fused glass. Grades: 5-12 $95 Kitty Alcott is a fused glass artist living in Gatlinburg. She received her BA in Art from University of Florida and fused glass training at Arrowmont; member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild for glass and the Foothills Craft Guild in glass and pottery. No Rules, Just Wooden Boxes! | CD10WDW-Jan16 This course will be a free-for-all in the crafting and surface design of one-of-a-kind band saw boxes. We will cover basic tool use and safety, and then dive right into making a custom box. When it comes to band saw boxes you are not limited in any way, so let your imagination run wild. Grades 8-12 $95 Kent Perdue received a BFA in Crafts and Material Studies with a focus in woodworking and furniture design from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2009. He is interested in making furniture, jewelry and other sculptural forms using a wide variety of techniques and materials. Back to top |
Discovering Your Own Painting Style in Acrylics & Oils | CD10PTG-Jan16 Learn many new painting methods in acrylics and oils. Explore the exciting possibilities of acrylics on canvas, board, and paper. Progress to oil painting using the traditional style of the old masters, as well as the newer methods used by the impressionists. Use these opportunities of discovery to develop your own personal painting style. Grades: 5-12 $95 Ed Lockett has worked with Arrowmont’s children’s classes for more than 16 years. He has a BS degree in Art Education from East Tennessee State University and an MA degree in Media Services. Ed is an accomplished potter and painter who teaches at Tennessee High School in Bristol, TN. Back to top |
