1946

The Smoky Mountains and tourist industry continued to factor into the environment in Gatlinburg.

Black Bears in the Great Smoky Mountains

In the 2nd year of offering the Summer Craft Workshop, Marian Heard, a University of Tennessee professor, joined Elsa Ulbricht as co-director of the program. A “simple” lunch at noon was added to the workshops, as well as one day each week spent traveling to educational or recreational centers in the area.

The Settlement School continued to partner with the County to supplement basic education for Sevier County students. 1946 was the first year the School offered a full physical education program.

1946 Pi Beta Phi Convention Booklet

Excerpt from “Gatlinburg Gleanings – Spring 1946” Report by Pi Beta Phi Settlement School Director, Ruth Dyer:

“Physical Education work in the high school and three upper grades of the elementary school is another Pi Pho contribution [to supplement basic education]. The young man, Don Spargo, in charge of this program is such a fine fellow to be associated with the boys and girls. He and his wife are very popular with the students as chaperons. Weather permitting many of the classes are held out of doors but during the bad weather, basket-ball has been the principal sport. The high school had a team for both boys and girls. We did not win too many games but lessons in being a good sport even in defeat have been learned.

[An] honor for the teamsis to be a party at Stewart [Stuart] Dormitory in the near future. Grade school tournament is still to be played off. Our boys team will play a team of alumni for the benefit of the senior class fund. Two town teams will play a benefit for the Red Cross in our gymnasium.”
