Botanical Printing: Leaves and Natural Colors on Fabrics

Workshop Description

This workshop reveals the magical combination of actual leaves and blooms with natural dyes and fabrics. Students will learn about preparing natural fibers for the process, dyeing with various plants for rich color, and using plants to develop interesting botanical prints on fabrics. The class will cover all aspects of eco-printing, including a special process using eucalyptus for unique prints and techniques for creating colorful backgrounds. Students will take home all color projects done in the workshop, including numerous samples and several finished scarves.

Artist Bio

Jan Quarles, of What Nature Leaves, is a long-time fiber artist who works with the beauty of the natural world. She has worked with fiber and color for more than 30 years as a knitter, spinner, dyer, sewer, and weaver. Today, she is a botanical printer, an indigo dyer, and a practitioner of shibori and katazome who deeply loves the blue magic of indigo. Quarles had a solo show of her indigo and botanical prints in Nashville in 2022 and has a botanical flag in an international exhibit. She has studied with many instructors at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, Penland School of Craft and other craft schools domestically and internationally. A former journalist and professor of mass communication in the United States and overseas, she has always practiced her fiber arts in the hours that were her own.
