The Nature and Fundamentals of Ironwork

Brock Martin・Metals・Summer Legacy July 12-17, 2026

Workshop Description

In this workshop, students can expect to gain a well-rounded understanding of steel, its limitations, and how it behaves. We will begin with a discussion of metallurgy, covering carbon content, alloys, temperature ranges, and heat treating techniques. We will then cover basic forging techniques like squaring, drawing out/tapering, scrolling, twisting, punching, planishing, and finishing, with attention to proper hammer technique and control. Students will incorporate these techniques into projects, starting with a wall hook and building upon their skills with items like forks, candleholders, fire pokers, knives, and tools. Students will walk away with many completed projects and have the opportunity to design and make personalized items.
