FACE IT! An Introduction to Painting Portraits in Oils

Workshop Description

In this workshop, students will experience the joys of painting portraits naturally using oils, and develop a practice in seeing shape and value to create lifelike portraits. The workshop will start with an overview of the materials, color and value, and skin tones. Key instruction will cover translating shape to form, basic exercises in measurements of the face, and practical techniques for applying the paint. This workshop is open to all skill levels – those new to painting in oils or have hesitation about painting faces realistically are welcome!

Artist Bio

Donna Woodley is a visual artist, educator, and curator living in Nashville, Tennessee, whose work explores the intersections of identity, culture, and history. She uses painting, mixed media, and installation to amplify narratives that engage viewers in dialogue about community, memory, and the complexities of human experience. As an art instructor at Tennessee State University (TSU), Woodley guides students to discover their creative voices, emphasizing both technical training and conceptual growth, and encouraging young artists to think critically about the power of visual storytelling. Woodley also serves as the interim gallery director at TSU, where her vision fosters thought-provoking exhibitions and highlights diverse artistic perspectives, creating platforms that showcase talent and heartfelt stories. Through her multifaceted practice, Woodley bridges the roles of artist, teacher, and curator with a deep belief in the transformative power of creativity to connect, engage, and encourage.
