IM-PLE-MENT: A Collaborative Archive by Ellen Kleckner & Linda Tien

The Im-ple-ment Archive is an evolving collaborative exploration of hand tools, utensils and other pieces of equipment used for a particular purpose between visual artists Ellen Kleckner and Linda Tien.  Applying an intuitive consideration to the familiar visual vocabulary established by a lineage of makers, through process, and material, the archive calls question to the commonplace or the recognizable through the investigation of form, textures and composition.  Through altering familiar materials and forms, the archive acts as a documentation to share the evolution of utility, format, function and maker through the employment of cooperative play and exploration paired with traditional practice and material. The collaboration is not only an example of how traditional materials are combined in a contemporary investigation, but also how two makers negotiate the synthesis of different elements.

ELLEN KLECKNER is an artist and educator based in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Her artistic practice weaves together community engagement, material investigation, and collaboration.  Ellen studied Ceramics at the Appalachian Center for Craft (BFA) and Ohio University (MFA). Ellen is the Executive Director of the Iowa Ceramics Center and Glass Studio, a non-profit community art center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

LINDA TIEN is a Vietnamese-American visual artist from Fort Worth, TX. Linda has a background in metalsmithing & jewelry design but she has always worked across media and formats including mixed media sculpture, performance, installation and video while thematically challenging and questioning conventions of identity. She studied at Texas Tech University (BFA) and Indiana University, Bloomington (MFA). In addition to her artistic practice, Linda also has many years’ experience in curation and gallery work. Linda is the Program Coordinator of the Grunwald Gallery of Art at IU Bloomington.
