Drawings by Janet Link and wood works by Josie Vogel.

On display is an ongoing series of 100 drawings, titled Migrations by Janet LinkThis body of work is derived from four photographs of shadows collected with her cell phone and records her exploration of the compositional and observational possibilities encountered while peering through a narrowly defined set of boundaries. From a point of view that is out of focus and removed from clear context, these drawings are driven by the lure of ambiguity, by an impulse to understand the incomprehensible and describe what can’t be put into words. They are a statement about the value of a search for that which can’t be found.

Born in 1962, Janet Link was reared in Raleigh, North Carolina in a family that valued and nurtured her constant desire to make things. In 1988 she went to Paris to study drawing and painting in a traditional atelier program with Ben Long and the following year received a BA in Art from Meredith College. During the years between undergraduate and graduate school, Janet worked as a studio artist in Raleigh and Oriental, NC. In 2004 she completed an MFA in Painting and Drawing at Louisiana State University, where she worked with Michael Crespo. Janet’s professional life is devoted to the practice, teaching, and elevation of observational drawing. Her work can be found in the collections of the City of Raleigh and the University of Arkansas, and her exhibition record includes shows in North Carolina, Louisiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Toronto. Janet has participated in visiting artist and residency programs in Tahanaout, Morocco; Penland and Kinston, NC; Gatlinburg, TN; and Spring Island, SC. She has taught at the NCSU College of Design, Penland School of Crafts, Meredith College, Centre College, and LSU.

Janet lives with her husband and two dogs in Raleigh where she works in the community of artists at Anchorlight.

In poetic contrast are the works by Josie Vogel, an artist, woodworker, and educator, who wields the tools and traditions of craft to explore sculptural forms in useful objects. Whether in the form of sculpture, furniture, or small goods, her work prioritizes craft, utility, and the inherent beauty of the material. She creates objects that delight the eye and are meant to be touched, held, and put to good use. The process of woodworking requires meticulous planning as well as intuition and improvisation, and she has grown my artistic voice from the place where these paths collide. Through woodworking, she creates simple and elegant forms from a material that is alive with color, texture, luster, and movement.

Josie Vogel is an artist working in wood, located in central North Carolina. While pursuing her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in sculpture at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, she fell in love with woodworking and has dedicated her career to the craft ever since. Josie makes her work in her home woodshop and sells through local and national stores. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and venues throughout central NC. Josie is currently the Director of Woodworking at the Sawtooth School of Visual Art in Winston-Salem, NC
