Selected work from Arrowmont’s Permanent Collection illustrates Sandra “Sandy” J. Blain’s influential career as a ceramic artist over the decades of her studio practice. The exhibited pieces demonstrate the range and development of her work, both in form and glaze selections, from her early days here at Arrowmont to objects completed within the past few years.
Sandy used a variety of techniques in her gestural utilitarian pottery, including built up textures and patterns, and layers of sprayed glazes. This combination of form and function produced works that comment on the relationship between craft and culture in an age of planned obsolescence and manufactured excess. Her work has been widely shown in both juried and invitational exhibitions.
She has won numerous awards and been widely published in journals and books. Her work can be found in both private and institutional collections.
Arrowmont is pleased to announce a memorial scholarship fund honoring Sandra J. Blain’s legacy at Arrowmont, with the first planned for 2026!
