Arrowmont Technology Intern: Fall Reflections by Kylie Lallemont

I first came to Arrowmont in 2019 as a Windgate University Fellow. That’s when I fell in love with Arrowmont and the opportunities it provides for artists from all over.

After my workshop, I always knew I was going to find a way to come back. When I found out I got the internship, I had this romanticized idea of what the program would be like. I was excited to make new friends and gain experience through this amazing opportunity.

I quickly realized that participating in a workshop and actually working for Arrowmont are too completely different experiences. This being said, being a technology intern has been exciting and very informative. Some days I show up to work with no idea what tasks I will be given that day.

My favorite task is taking pictures during workshops each week. My camera is an all access pass to each studio and gives me the opportunity to meet the new students for the week. I would ask lots of questions to the instructors and students about what they were working on. I was fascinated with learning about forms of art that I’m not familiar with. Most importantly, I got to see firsthand the impact Arrowmont has.

I’ve learned that work isn’t always as exciting every week. I spent a lot of time stuffing, sealing, and stamping envelopes for events and appeals. But I know this work is very important towards the growth of Arrowmont so it can continue being the impactful organization it is, while also providing fun and incredible experiences for the community and art/craft world.

Anyone considering being an intern needs to have a desire to see Arrowmont succeed. The community is what makes the work worth doing.

I don’t know what I am doing next personally, but I hope I can continue working for art non-profits and use what I have learned here at Arrowmont.
