Starry Night 2022 – 106

106
Title: “Hands in Indigo”
Artist: Jim Arendt
Medium: Reclaimed Denim Appliqué
Dimensions: 22” x 29”
Value: $1,000

“My artwork grows out of the need for me to understand our shifting relationship with labour and work. I grew up on a farm outside of Flint, Michigan. Denim is tough; it’s durable. It’s the land, it’s the people who wear it, it’s the cotton and the indigo and the rivets and the rugged fabric that withstands manual labor in the field, in the factory, in the plant. Each of my figures is a blood relation, or close enough. They’re not portraits, but how I perceive them. I try to capture them as their character in the family.”

In Jim Arendt’s unique piece, two denim hands mirror one another – clenching fistfuls of delicate denim flowers. The resultant image portrays both fragility and strength. All proceeds for “Hands in Indigo” will contribute to Arrowmont’s Diversity Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility initiatives.
