Jim Scarsella’s work is influenced by his interest in the natural world, organic textures, and color. His lidded vessels often depict organic subjects and patterns found in nature. The surface design of this intricate piece has a woodland feel with bark-like branches interweaving over a dark sepia background. This hollow form was turned to allow for deep relief carving. Careful consideration of the wood grain informed the design. Scarsella uses a combination of power carving and pyrography to create the embellishments on his work. He hand-colored this piece using acrylic paint and finished it with several coats of satin lacquer.
