“Simpson Stopper trees have always intrigued me. I love the variety of colors and textures of their thin, spindly tree trunks, and the lacy contrast of Spanish Moss that collects in their branches. Where they were growing was a dense, dark, wooden area which was not the kind of environment I wanted to paint. The more I looked at the trees as I drew and painted them, the more I realized there were hidden personalities in the burls, branches, and bark. Then I realized…Nature speaks to those who listen.
This painting led to a new series of drawings where each reveals a magical world changing a once-recognizable object into something new that invites the viewer to take a closer look.”
