Title: Minaret Bottle with Seljuk Pattern
Artist: Forrest Lesch-Middelton
Medium: Ceramics
Dimensions: 14.5″ x 7″ diameter
Value: $350
Forrest Lesch-Middelton makes ceramics that “look like the products of an ancient civilization whose people proudly insisted on being buried with their dishware.” (NY Times, 1/31/2013). He mastered the use of image transfer, and invented a technique he dubs “volumetric image transfer” where he transfers screen-printed pattern and imagery onto his pot surfaces while they are still wet and being thrown on the wheel. This technique requires him to shape the vessels from the inside only to retain an unblemished pattern on the surface. This ceramic minaret bottle uses imagery inspired by the Seljuk Dynasty, an ancient Middle Eastern society with strong ties to architecture and cultural influences in Persia.
