Overview

In this workshop, students will learn several introductory basketry techniques and explore the possibilities of sculptural forms and experimental play. This workshop will include instruction on paired twining, random weave, and looping, and how to deploy these processes to create expressive forms. Additionally, students will have an opportunity to integrate mixed media into their work, including paint and textiles. Students should plan to interact, play, learn, create and experiment together. Open to all skill levels, no experience necessary.

Artist Bio

Meg Morley

Meg Morley is a craft-based fiber artist living in Sylvan Lake, Michigan, just outside of Detroit. Creating art has been her way of processing the world through making: hands-on, experimenting, learning, problem-solving, and puzzling. She works with a range of craft-based techniques to respond to nagging curiosities about topics such as comfort, control, and utility. Most recently, Meg’s work has been exhibited in Environment + Microclimates as part of a group show with Fiber Club* as part of Detroit Month of Design. She was invited to participate in Arrowmont’s Pentaculum residency, has exhibited in multiple group shows, and is a member of the National Basketry Organization. Meg holds a BA in Theater and Dance from Knox College, with a focus in design.

Explore the Fiber & Paper Studio

From our earliest days, fiber arts have been an important medium in the Arrowmont workshop canon. For over 100 years this craft has been taught at Arrowmont by local and national artists alike. Today, the Fibers Studio has added Paper to its name as we expand the use of this space to include all things papermaking too! From felting to weaving, to macramé to found-object paper sculpture, our fiber and paper workshops push the envelope and blur the lines between these media and so much more. With a view towards the Dining Hall and Wood Studio, the indoor/outdoor nature of our covered porch and multi-room studio space make this a quirky and beloved corner of the Turner Building.
