Overview

Join us on a journey into the fundamentals of woodturning. Whether you are already turning or are just starting out, this class is for you. In this class we explore the fundamentals of woodturning to include wood preparation, tool selection and sharpening, project ideas and more. We will emphasize safety so that students feel confident and comfortable using new or unfamiliar tools and equipment. While this class will focus on building essential skills, we have plenty of fun project ideas to practice our newly acquired skills, including spinning tops, honey dippers, whistles, and useful items like bowls and rolling pins. This workshop is open to ages 16+.

This workshop will be held for 3 consecutive weeks on Tuesday and Thursday from 5:30-8:30PM. In addition, student can choose to participant in open studio hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:00-5:00PM ahead of the scheduled workshop time.

Workshop Details

  • The workshop runs for 3 consecutive weeks on Tuesday and Thursday (2/17-3/5)
  • Class runs 5:30PM-8:30PM
  • Studios are open 12:00PM-5:00PM prior to workshop start Tuesday & Thursday (2/19-3/5)

Need help covering workshop costs? Arrowmont offers financial aid opportunities to broaden access to our arts and craft programs. We believe a diverse community enriches the learning experience for all.

Material fees are not included in our national workshop costs, but are included with the cost of our winter short workshops. A material list with estimated costs will be emailed about 30 days before the national workshop begins.

Clifton Chisum
Clifton Chisum’s woodturning journey began in high school and has been meticulously refined through his involvement with the Tidewater Turners of Norfolk and extensive training at The Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts. Today, he is a dedicated educator and active demonstrator for regional woodturning clubs and public events, sharing a professional expertise that spans artistic vessels, utilitarian objects, and architectural production work. In his teaching, Clifton emphasizes the vital intersection of creativity and precision, guiding students to build the fundamental technical skill sets necessary to advance their own woodturning mastery and artistic vision.
