Artist Bio
Jiyoung Chung
Jiyoung Chung is an acclaimed artist known for developing an innovative method for utilizing Joomchi, a traditional Korean method of papermaking, into a contemporary art form. She earned her BFA in Painting from RISD and her MFA in Print/Media from Cranbrook Academy of Art. Chung has had a highly prolific exhibition career with 33 solo shows in Korea, the USA, Australia, France, Finland, Romania, and the UK. Her influence extends to curation; in 2010, she curated the International Korean/American Joomchi show for the European Patchwork Meeting in France, which later toured in Korea and America. She is also the author of the book, Joomchi & Beyond. Chung has received major awards including the 'Gold Award' by the Smithsonian Craft Show in 2019, the 'Award of Excellence' by the American Craft Council/Baltimore show in 2012, and the Adrianna Farrelli Prize, 'Excellence in Fiber Art' by the Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show in 2012. Her works are in the permanent collections of the U.S. Department of State's Art Bank Program, the Fidelity Corporate Art Collection, and the Museum of Art & Design in New York.
Explore the Fiber & Paper Studio
From our earliest days, fiber arts have been an important medium in the Arrowmont workshop canon. For over 100 years this craft has been taught at Arrowmont by local and national artists alike. Today, the Fibers Studio has added Paper to its name as we expand the use of this space to include all things papermaking too! From felting to weaving, to macramé to found-object paper sculpture, our fiber and paper workshops push the envelope and blur the lines between these media and so much more.
With a view towards the Dining Hall and Wood Studio, the indoor/outdoor nature of our covered porch and multi-room studio space make this a quirky and beloved corner of the Turner Building.
