Arrowmont Connections – Audry Deal-McEver forges forward in her studio during COVID-19

Arrowmont is a special community full of creative people – a family who know that coming together and making art is important. We talk a lot about the Arrowmont Experience – connecting through craft and community. That connection exists beyond physical proximity. It is in shared memories and new ideas. It lives in the friendships we make with each other. It grows when we learn and support one another.

Whether on campus or off, we are connected as members of the Arrowmont family. Over the next few weeks, we are going to share stories from our community of instructors, residents, and students in a new series, Arrowmont Connections.

Audry Deal-McEver is a potter from Nashville, Tennessee. She has a BFA in Ceramics from Ohio University and studies at Burg Giebichenstein Hochschule für Kunst und Design in Halle, Germany. Her work has been in exhibitions as diverse as the American Museum of Ceramic Art, the Disjecta Contemporary Arts Center, and the Nashville International Airport. Deal-McEver has taught at Middle Tennessee State University and at community education and workshop centers.

Audry has participated as an Instructor Assistant and a 2019 Pentaculum resident at Arrowmont, and was scheduled to teach PLAYING WITH PATTERN: CREATING ORNATE SURFACE DESIGNS ON CLAY this spring. While Audry wasn’t able to join us at the School for an in-person workshop this March, she has been active in connecting and sharing her ceramics practice online. She recently found out that she is the recipient of a South Arts Individual Artist Career Opportunity Grant to support her upcoming solo exhibit at the Customs House Museum (Clarksville, TN) in January of 2021.

Audry is the president of the Midstate Chapter of Tennessee Craft, and recently shared a tour of her studio. Click here to see her converted garage in a shirt, 1.5 minute virtual tour.

Audry was recently a guest on the podcast, Tales of a Red Clay Rambler on episode 294. She joined Jenn Cole in a discussion comparing the art fair circuit with gallery sales. Click here to listen.

Right now like many working artists, Audry is making 90% of her living through online sales. You can support her work – and get a special gift for Mother’s Day – through her Etsy shop. She wrote,

“Looking for a special Mother’s Day present? Etsy shop update is live! Baking dishes, vases, platters, serving dishes, new travel mugs, pour overs, mugs and even a cake stand! Everything mums like best!
If you (or your mom) live within 20 minutes from downtown Nashville, I will even deliver your piece for free! Local pick-up is also an option. Etsy will automatically charge you a shipping fee, but I can refund this after we make pick-up/delivery plans.”
