Arrowmont Connections: Christine Garvey promotes creativity through Mindset Mondays and A Mighty Practice podcast

Arrowmont is a special community full of creative people – a family who know that coming together and making art is important. We talk a lot about the Arrowmont Experience – connecting through craft and community. That connection exists beyond physical proximity. It is in shared memories and new ideas. It lives in the friendships we make with each other. It grows when we learn and support one another.

Whether on campus or off, we are connected as members of the Arrowmont family. Over the next few weeks, we are going to share stories from our community of instructors, residents, and students in a new series, Arrowmont Connections.

Christine Garvey most recently was assistant professor of practice and area head of the 2D art foundation at the University of Texas at Austin. She received her MFA from Concordia University Montreal and a BFA from Washington University in St Louis. Garvey received a 2016 Fulbright Research Grant from the Italian Commission, Concordia University’s Faculty of Fine Arts Fellowship, and a City of Austin Community Initiatives Grant. She divides her time between Austin, New York and Italy.

Christine is scheduled to teach SELF-PORTRAITS FOR THE FUTURE, October 4 – 10, 2020, which mixes 2D and 3D media paired with a conceptual exercise allowing students to discover the history of self-portraiture and to capture something personal and universal about a specific time period.

Christine works as an artist, instructor, and coach. She has two new projects to help artists stay invigorated and creative during the pandemic.

Mindset Mondays – May 4, 2020

Mindset Mondays is a free workshop Christine offers for any creative spirit who needs support and resources during this challenging time. She offers them about once a month. She writes,

“As a group, we’ll reflect on how we can cultivate self-compassion, permission, and constraints that can empower us to make decisions. We’ll consider how we can focus on the opportunities (both in our creative work and professional lives) of this challenging period and ways to move forward.

Past topics include:

  • “How do I start making things again?”
  • How to recognize a good opportunity for your work
  • How to generate ideas

Christine’s next Mindset Monday is coming up next week – May 4, 2020. To register, install zoom on your computer or device and sign up at http://www.christine-garvey.com/free-mindset-coaching.

A Mighty Practice Podcast

Christine has started a new podcast about how to identify and overcome your creative roadblocks.

Each episode will include concepts you can apply in your creative practice to move through ‘ruts’ and get excited to make your work again.

Episodes are about 20 minutes each, and address topics such as fear of getting started, building your self-worth, and how to follow your “creative thrills” and set expectations for your art practice.
