Overview

Go beyond the basics and learn how to add compelling interest to your jewelry designs with surface texture, volume, and layers. This workshop focuses on techniques that will elevate your work from simple to professional. Students will learn valuable soldering tips, clever ways to incorporate found materials and beads, and how to create rich surfaces on copper and silver using various textures and patinas. By the end of this hands-on experience, students will leave with several finished, show-ready pieces and a new set of skills to make their designs truly fabulous. Open to students of all skill levels.

Artist Bio

Deb Karash

Deb Karash is an Asheville, NC based jewelry artist. She received her MA in Jewelry and Metals from Northern Illinois University. After many years selling her work at major art fairs around the US she now teaches across the US and abroad. Through teaching she delights in sharing her skills and bringing students together to learn and to share their own skills and stories. For her, teaching is more than just imparting information. “There is a joy in giving a student that ‘aha’ moment when something really changes for them,” she says, “I love guiding their skills to the next level.”

Explore the Metals Studio

With views that overlook our wood hillside, the Metal Studio is located in our main Turner Building. Central aisles of dedicated workbenches, with a bank of windows on one side and vented multi-use tables for casting, soldering, and finishing on the other. This vaulted studio is a jeweler’s favorite. Ideal for smaller metal work of all kinds, the long narrow space includes hammer and machine rooms, outdoor covered porch for larger fabrication, and a shared kiln room with the Glass Studio.
