Overview

In this hands-on ceramics workshop, students will explore a unique surface-building approach - the pulled high-relief, or intensive darting technique. Students will learn how to transform simple drawn images on the clay surface into expressive, sculptural reliefs that organically rise from the vessel itself. Using either wheel-thrown or handbuilt forms as a base, students will experiment with cutting, pulling, and rebuilding the clay surface to create high-relief compositions. A strong emphasis will be placed on understanding how to structurally support and refine these pulled sections, covering everything from joining with coils and trimming to successfully managing the drying and firing process.

Artist Bio

Huey Lee

Huey Lee is a ceramic artist from South Korea who now resides in the United States. He completed his training as a traditional Korean ceramic artisan and further honed his skills working at various pottery and ceramic studios. During this time, he had the privilege of studying under renowned ceramic artists, including TaeGon Kim, Inchin Lee, and the late Gil-bae Kim, who imparted their knowledge of technique, form, and aesthetics. Huey Lee served as a resident artist and instructor at the KC Clay Guild fro 2023-2025. Lee holds a BFA from Kyung Hee University in Korea and an MFA from the University of Georgia.

Explore the Metals Studio

With views that overlook our wood hillside, the Metal Studio is located in our main Turner Building. Central aisles of dedicated workbenches, with a bank of windows on one side and vented multi-use tables for casting, soldering, and finishing on the other. This vaulted studio is a jeweler’s favorite. Ideal for smaller metal work of all kinds, the long narrow space includes hammer and machine rooms, outdoor covered porch for larger fabrication, and a shared kiln room with the Glass Studio.
