Overview

In this workshop, students will make luscious paste papers using a variety of texture techniques and from there build and hand stitch a hard cover Coptic Stitch Journal. Designed to fertilize a daily creative practice, this workshop blends book art technique, poetic investigations in the journal, and communal conversation about how we show up as artists in today’s world. This workshop will be peppered with other small, folded book forms, and heart-opening writing prompts in recognition that to develop and deepen our work, we are required to know ourselves more deeply. This workshop is open to experienced artists and people new to book art, and especially designed for people who want to deepen their artistic practice by expanding their vocabulary with color, community, and provocative prompts. Students in this workshop will be surprised by beauty, nourished by making, and inspired by the collective.

Artist Bio

Suzi Banks Baum

Suzi Banks Baum is an artist, educator, and "protector of the imagination" based in the Berkshires of Western Massachusetts, who teaches book arts and daily creative practice. Her interdisciplinary work, fueled by an obsession with marigolds and a continual conversation with the natural world, exists at the crossroads of literary and visual art. Her signature teaching style, inspired by her mentor Paulus Berensohn, has been called "a feast for creative flourishing." Banks Baum is an award-winning writer whose work appears in journals like Hypertext, The Dunes Review, and the Guild of Book Workers journal. Her mixed media and textile work has been featured in the book Collage Your Life by Melanie Mowinski and exhibited at venues like Gallery 51 in North Adams, MA.

Explore the 2D Arts Studio

Located in the historic West Building, the 2D Studio is a bright, multi-use room for all 2D related workshops at Arrowmont. Ideal for our printmaking, bookmaking, and painting or drawing classes, there’s plenty of room for groups of up to 20. A small outdoor courtyard offers a shaded place of respite or an extended outdoor instruction space.
