Overview

This workshop will take students through the process of creating realistic animal sculptures with movement and expression. Armatures with metal piping and newspaper will serve as base construction. Realistic photographs will be provided as reference material. This workshop will explore animals in motion (leg positions), details of claws, open mouth, teeth and facial expression. Once basic construction and stability are established, students will be able to lean into their own personal aesthetic. Participants can take their greenware home or leave at Arrowmont to dry and be fired at a later date. This workshop will focus more on expressive details along with examining the flexibility of an adjustable armature that supports positional movement. Open to students who have an intermediate level of handbuilding.

Artist Bio

Tina Curry

Tina Curry has been a clay artist for over 32 years and holds a BA from the University of Florida. Retired from a career in Graphic Design, she is a full-time ceramic and bronze sculptor living in Knoxville, Tennessee. Tina’s sculptures are individually handbuilt and her signature finishes are the result of alternative firing techniques with raku, horsehair, barrel/pit and saggar firing. She was featured artist for Southern Highlands Craft Guild marketing campaign in 2016 and honored with a solo exhibition for the Tennessee Arts Commission in 2018. In 2021, she was selected to create ceramic art sculptures for the Tennessee Governor’s Awards honorees. Tina’s work was featured in Ceramics Monthly Magazine in September 2022, and in 2024, Tina’s animal sculptures featured in asolo exhibtion at Grovewood Gallery in Asheville. She serves on the Board of Governors for Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts. Her animal sculptures have been commissioned by Knoxville Zoo, Tennessee and Calgary Zoo, Canada.
