Anatomical Approach to Hollow Building the Bust

This workshop teaches students how to hollow-build a self-referential bust using an interwoven combination of slab, coil, and pinch techniques. All levels of experience are welcome. Students with an interest in the figure and anatomy will enhance their ability to understand proportion as it relates to the figure. Students will learn critical skills such as how to scale up from a maquette and how to build interior clay armatures. Simultaneously, the instructor will sculpt to demonstrate hand-building techniques, focusing on balance, bone structure, and the detailed construction of all facial features and planes of the head. Emphasis is placed on using the human figure as a self-referential vehicle to explore personal narrative, and students should come prepared with source material about the self.
