Chimeric Clay: Sculpting Narrative Mythologies

August 9 - 14, 2026
Intermediate
Clay, Sculpture

Overview

This hands-on intermediate workshop invites students to tap into the human tradition of creating their own narrative mythologies through chimeric sculpture. Students will begin by considering the impactful meanings behind different types of animal, human, and plant combinations and what they wish to communicate through their hybridized creations. This workshop will guide students in combining reference images to brainstorm complex creatures, and then dive into various hand-building and texturing techniques to realize detailed and dynamic three-dimensional forms in clay. This is an ideal workshop for students who want to push their conceptual ideas while expanding their technical vocabulary in sculptural ceramics.
