Overview

This playful ceramics workshop will teach students to reimagine their relationship with color and form in clay. Students will be encouraged to experiment with both familiar and new forms, questioning traditional function while bringing a fresh perspective to their ceramic practice. This workshop will utilize a variety of handbuilding and throwing techniques, including wheel throwing, trimming, coil, and slab building. Students will explore how to work with colored clay and how to discuss and utilize both raw clay and glazed surfaces in their work. This workshop is geared toward intermediate participants with an interest in process-oriented methods of making and creating fresh, innovative work.

Artist Bio

Chris Alveshere

Chris Alveshere is an artist, educator, and entrepreneur based in Missoula, Montana. He is the co-owner of Workroom Montana, a community arts space, and Flecks + Specks, a ceramic grog business. Originally from North Dakota, Chris holds undergraduate degrees in ceramics and art education from Minnesota State University and an MFA in ceramics from Alfred University. He teaches community education classes for both adults and youth while maintaining a full-time studio practice.

Explore the Ceramics Studio

Located in the historic West Building, the Ceramic Studios are a multi-room complex dedicated to all our clay loving students. Featuring both a wheel throwing studio and hand-building studio, shared spaces between these classrooms include a hot box, electric kiln room, train kiln yard (soda and wood firing), and glaze room. With dedicated, professional studio staff on-hand to assist, Arrowmont is prepared to meet every knead – err need.
