Overview

This workshop invites students to explore the atmospheric effects of soda firing on pre-bisqued ceramic work. Students will be asked to bring their own cone 6 bisqueware to decorate. Students will learn how to prepare and decorate their pots using a variety of materials, including glazes, underglazes, slips, and oxides, with the goal of using soda vapor to add depth and nuance to their decorated surfaces. This workshop will involve loading and firing the soda kiln. On the day the kiln is cooling, students will learn to handbuild small vessels, such as clay boxes and cups, using pinching and carving methods, adding new foundational skills to their practice.

Artist Bio

Melissa Weiss

Melissa Weiss is a full-time artist based in Asheville, North Carolina, who works primarily in illustrative, functional ceramics. Originally from New York City, she transitioned to ceramics after graduating with a BFA in photography from the School of Visual Arts in 2000, setting up her first studio in 2004. Melissa digs wild clay from her land in the Arkansas Ozarks (the traditional territories of the Caddo, Osage, and Quapaw tribes) for her pieces, continually experimenting and exploring the material. Her work strives to illuminate the sweetness and fortitude of humanity, drawing inspiration from all people fighting for liberation and a just world. She has taught and exhibited her ceramics across the United States.
