Happiness Is a Warm Extruder

October 18 - 23, 2026
Intermediate
Clay

Overview

In this intermediate-level workshop, students will explore extrusion and slab techniques in a quest to make anything-but-round functional stoneware. The approach will be to let the process show in the work, resulting in fresh and lively forms. Students will work with unconventional forming methods and unusual approaches to surface decoration. Key topics covered include combining extrusions and slabs, and various surface applications like latex resist and brushwork decoration. Students will also learn techniques for printing with stencils cut from Tyvek, using colored slip inlay on stretched slabs, and the basics of making custom extruder dies. This workshop will interest throwers who would like to expand their horizons beyond the wheel, as myths will be busted and secrets revealed!
