Overview

Dive into slip casting as a way of creating multiples! In this workshop, students will learn to work with plaster to create fundamental one- and two-part molds and how to cast them. Discussions will also cover designing and making models using a variety of materials (clay, plaster, foam, wood), adjusting casting slip for proper specific gravity, and preparing castings for firing. The workshop focuses on the technical aspects of these materials and processes, providing a solid foundation for students to confidently implement them into their studio practice. Students can expect to leave with a few finished molds and test castings. All skill levels are welcome.

Artist Bio

Stormie Burns

Stormie Burns is a studio artist originally from central Florida who moved to the mountains of western North Carolina in 2014 to work as a studio assistant for ceramic artists. Her studio practice focuses on slip casting and mold making, but she also operates a small-scale cut flower farm and floral design practice in Bakersville, North Carolina. Stormie has solidified her craft through intensive programs, completing the two-year Core Fellowship program at Penland School of Craft in the winter of 2019, and successfully completing residencies at both Haystack Mountain School of Crafts and Penland School of Craft.

Explore the Ceramics Studio

Located in the historic West Building, the Ceramic Studios are a multi-room complex dedicated to all our clay loving students. Featuring both a wheel throwing studio and hand-building studio, shared spaces between these classrooms include a hot box, electric kiln room, train kiln yard (soda and wood firing), and glaze room. With dedicated, professional studio staff on-hand to assist, Arrowmont is prepared to meet every knead – err need.
