Overview

In this workshop, students will experiment with various surface designs to create a sculptural vessel that can live in a domestic space. The workshop will investigate hand-building techniques such as coiling, slab, and press-molding while challenging the idea of a vessel within traditional and contemporary contexts. Instruction will include texture and pattern developments on porcelain surfaces, small-size mold making for pattern and form, painting with color oxides, and glaze techniques for mid-high fire. Students will finish a small vessel, bring diverse surface test tiles home, and use the gained knowledge to enhance their creative practices with clay.

Artist Bio

Wansoo Kim

Kim is an artist and educator who currently resides in Clarksville, Tennessee. He earned his MFA in Studio Art from the University of Nebraska and his BFA in Ceramic Art and Design from Seoul National University of Science and Technology. Since coming to the United States in 2013, Kim has actively pursued his career as an artist, showing his works regularly in solo and group exhibitions. Recent solo exhibitions include Jane Hartsook Gallery at Greenwich House (New York, NY; 2022), Watkins College of Art at Belmont University (Nashville, TN; 2022). His recent group exhibitions include American Museum Of Ceramic Art (Pomona, CA; 2024), Red Arrow Gallery (Nashville, TN; 2023) and Whitespace (Atlanta, GA; 2023). He currently teaches at Austin Peay State University.

Explore the Ceramics Studio

Located in the historic West Building, the Ceramic Studios are a multi-room complex dedicated to all our clay loving students. Featuring both a wheel throwing studio and hand-building studio, shared spaces between these classrooms include a hot box, electric kiln room, train kiln yard (soda and wood firing), and glaze room. With dedicated, professional studio staff on-hand to assist, Arrowmont is prepared to meet every knead – err need.
