Overview

In this workshop, students will focus on handbuilding functional and creative forms while learning to create and apply terra sigilatta. The students will learn and build many utilitarian forms: from coffee mugs to different types of lidded jars and bowls. Wheel throwing and altering forms will also be covered. The workshop will be a creative week of experimenting for the students and open to all skill levels.

Artist Bio

Mike Griffin

Mike Griffin is a father, an artist and a golf professional. Living in Upstate New York six months out of the year, he is in his studio mostly every day. Mike is represented in galleries up and down the east coast including the Arrowmont Gallery in Knoxville. Recently featured in the February 2022 issue of Ceramics Monthly, he is well known for his use of terra sigillatta and handbuilding techniques.

Located in the historic West Building, the Ceramic Studios are a multi-room complex dedicated to all our clay loving students. Featuring both a wheel throwing studio and hand-building studio, shared spaces between these classrooms include a hot box, electric kiln room, train kiln yard (soda and wood firing), and glaze room. With dedicated, professional studio staff on-hand to assist, Arrowmont is prepared to meet every knead – err need.
