Surface Variation in an Electric Kiln

November 3 - 8, 2024
Clay

Overview

When working with an electric kiln, one does not have the variables associated with atmospheric firing, so it is necessary to introduce them at different stages of the making cycle in order to create variation. Starting with simple cups, students in this workshop will learn about different surface treatments that can be created at the wet clay stage to result in a rustic look. Students will hand build pots with organic edges, forage for local clay and rocks, and explore how slips, crushed rock, and sand can be applied at the dry stage to increase variation. Students will also learn how to spray glazes such that it creates variation, and how wood ash can be used to highlight glazes in the electric kiln. This workshop will prepare students with a toolkit of ideas that can be employed to create surface variation which they can then use as a springboard for their own explorations.
