Overview

During this workshop, participants will learn how to use stencil resist techniques on greenware to create engaging and intricate designs on unfired clay surfaces. Students will learn how to use a digital vinyl cutter as a tool for creating reusable stencils from digital and hand-drawn images. Discussions will include elements of design, concept consideration, and keeping a sketchbook. Demonstrations of hand building techniques and slip applications will help students explore form while experimenting with layering, negative space, and texture within their own work.

Artist Bio

Sam Oliver

Sam Oliver is a studio artist based in Tryon, North Carolina, known for her expertise in slab building and surface decorating techniques. She received her BFA from Winthrop University in 2013 and went on to complete a special student study in ceramics at the College of William and Mary, where she also researched 16th and 17th Century Earthenware Figures at The Decorative Arts Museum. Oliver has been an artist in residence at several prestigious institutions, including The Bascom Center for Arts, Brockway Center for Arts and Technology, Pocosin Arts, and Penland School of Craft. Her work has been featured in publications such as Ceramics Monthly and Pottery Making Illustrated.

Explore the Ceramics Studio

Located in the historic West Building, the Ceramic Studios are a multi-room complex dedicated to all our clay loving students. Featuring both a wheel throwing studio and hand-building studio, shared spaces between these classrooms include a hot box, electric kiln room, train kiln yard (soda and wood firing), and glaze room. With dedicated, professional studio staff on-hand to assist, Arrowmont is prepared to meet every knead – err need.
