Free-Form Clay Fired in a Rocket Kiln

May 31 - June 5, 2026
Intermediate
Clay

Overview

Join this unique, hands-on workshop that combines soft-forming techniques with the innovative, eco-friendly technology of the rocket kiln. Designed for intermediate students with some prior experience, this class is a deep dive into both making and firing. Students will be introduced to an approach for creating free-form pieces with layered decoration and low-relief sprigging. Students will also have access to traditional colorful engobes and glazes, which have been specifically adapted for cone 10 soda firing. This is an incredible opportunity to learn a complete process, from start to finish, that merges creative form-making with an advanced firing method. Students will also learn how to build a low-wood, low-emission rocket kiln from upcycled materials. This technology, based on the smokeless rocket stove, uses about one-fourth of the fuel of typical kilns. The class will cover every technical consideration, from assembling the firebox and modifying a discarded electric kiln shell. Because of its efficient, smokeless nature, this kiln is well-suited for urban driveways, art centers, and off-grid studios.
