Saggar Firing in an Electric Kiln: Exploring Smoke-Marked Surfaces

November 1 - 6, 2026
Open to All Skill Levels
Clay

Overview

In this workshop, students will learn to create the beautiful, smoke-marked surfaces of pit firing within the controlled and safe environment of an electric kiln. This workshop is designed for potters of all skill levels and offers a unique opportunity to explore a safe and accessible alternative firing method. Students will gain hands-on experience building their own saggars and learn how to safely use a variety of combustibles to achieve dramatic, one-of-a-kind surfaces. This class will also introduce the versatile material of terra sigillata and demonstrate how to use colored variations to enhance surface design. By the end of this workshop, students will have a basic working knowledge of saggar firing in an electric kiln, providing a fantastic foundation for further explorations in their own studio practice.
