Overview

In this workshop, unlock a fascinating and clever woodworking technique by learning to create green wood shrink boxes. This unique method takes advantage of the natural properties of wood - students will turn a box from green wood and then fit a separate, dry wooden disk into a specially turned groove. As the green wood dries, it naturally shrinks and locks the bottom into place, creating a perfectly sealed, friction-fit box without any glue or fasteners. Throughout the workshop, students of all skill levels will turn multiple boxes, exploring various shapes and styles while gaining a deeper understanding of wood movement. Time will also be dedicated to the critical skill of predicting wood movement to ensure a perfect fit every time. This workshop offers a unique opportunity to learn a truly remarkable joinery technique from a master craftsman.

Mark Gardner

Mark Gardner lives and works in his studio in Saluda, North Carolina where he creates functional and decorative items. He teaches woodturning courses throughout the country. Gardner’s work can be found in fine craft galleries in the U.S. and in the public collections of the Yale Art Gallery and the Museum of Art and Design.
