Overview

This woodworking workshop is designed for students of every craft medium to get comfortable using wood shop tools and machines. Students will learn how to safely approach repairing, designing, and constructing the wooden elements needed for their own craft. The class will focus on tackling smaller-scale projects such as warping boards, lace bobbins, paper deckles, clay shaping tools, and hammer handles. Students will gain a variety of fundamental and safe woodworking skills that they can immediately take back to their home studios to support their future making. Absolute beginners and anyone with specific questions are welcome.

Material fees are not included in our national workshop costs, but are included with the cost of our winter short workshops. A material list with estimated costs will be emailed about 30 days before the national workshop begins.

Artist Bio

Kate Davidson

Kate Davidson (she/they) is a woodworker, craftsperson, and educator based out of Layton, New Jersey, whose versatile work ranges from functional furniture to sculptural play. Originally from New England, she began her career in historical restoration carpentry on the coast of Maine before attending the Vermont Woodworking School's immersion program and earning an MFA in Woodworking and Furniture from UW Madison. Davidson has exhibited her pieces nationally at venues including the Esherick Museum and the Museum for Art in Wood in Pennsylvania. She has completed prestigious residencies at Penland School of Craft, the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship, and Pocosin Arts School of Fine Craft, and currently serves as the Woodworking Coordinator at Peters Valley School of Craft.
