Overview

This woodturning workshop is designed for turners ready to move beyond basic cutting and focus on the creation of pleasing forms with nuance and visual details. The class centers on container and box forms developed through careful experimentation, with strong emphasis on an awareness for nuances of line, proportions, thoughtful wood selection, and impactful design elements. Students will explore simple and effective strategies for altering turned forms, including abrasive shaping techniques. Students will also learn to add textures such as chatter work, embossing, fluting, and spiraling, and how to combine turned elements via both static and kinetic connections. A series of short structured exercises, demonstrations, one-on-one instruction, and ample exploration time will greatly expand your sense of possibility for what a wooden container can be.

Artist Bio

Michael Mocho

Michael Mocho is a full-time woodworker based in Albuquerque, New Mexico, with a professional career spanning nearly 50 years. He has developed a diverse skill set encompassing furniture design, architectural millwork, sculpture, musical instruments, metalwork, turning, and pattern making. His extensive professional career includes residencies at the International Woodturning Exchange, Anderson Ranch Arts Center, and Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, as well as participation in regional, national, and international turning symposia. Michael has taught at craft schools across the U.S., including Anderson Ranch, Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, the Marc Adams School, the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship, and Peters Valley. He has presented demonstrations and classes for over 100 chapters of the American Association of Woodturners. He maintains a very well-equipped studio, primarily producing furniture, contract woodturning, and a wide variety of things made from wood and other materials.
