Woodturning

Overview

In this woodturning workshop, students will explore the unlimited creative potential of the lidded box. This workshop begins with fundamentals, covering the basics of form and design, end-grain hollowing, and mastering the technique for a perfect lid fit. From there, students will move into intermediate and advanced variations, such as boxes with inlaid "picture frame" lids, square side-grain boxes, and complex multi-part boxes with nested lids or layered contrasting wood "sleeves." Students may also explore advanced techniques like carving, using wood dyes and milk paint, and multi-axis turning. Students can expect to complete several boxes during the week and will go home with the inspiration to create dozens more.

Artist Bio

Chris Hoehle

Chris Hoehle is a professional woodturner based in Denver, Colorado. While he maintains an active studio practice creating and selling his work in local galleries and art festivals, he is equally passionate about teaching. Known as a patient, insightful instructor, he especially enjoys working with beginners and helping them get a strong start in the craft. Chris developed a popular series of woodturning classes and open shop days at the community woodshop at the Denver Tool Library. He has also taught week-long workshops at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts and has demonstrated at various woodturning clubs and regional symposia across the country.
