Overview

In this hands-on workshop, students will take their pottery to the next level, gaining knowledge and skills to create larger, more complex forms. Open to all skill levels, this workshop explores a variety of throwing techniques, including stacking multiple pieces together and throwing and altering to achieve ambitious new forms. Once pots are made, students will delve into several decorative processes and discuss design principles to effectively pair decoration with form. This workshop is ideal for anyone interested in expanding their creative expression and building both their throwing skills and conceptual understanding of the objects they create.

Artist Bio

Gillan Doty

Gillan Doty is a ceramic artist from the Northeast, who grew up spending time in the Adirondacks of New York and the Monadnock region of New Hampshire. He discovered clay in high school and went on to earn his BFA in Ceramics from the Maine College of Art. After graduating, he completed residencies at the Northern Clay Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Odyssey ClayWorks in Asheville, North Carolina. Following his residencies, Gillan established a studio in Asheville, where he continues to work despite his studio being destroyed by Hurricane Helene. He has since set up a new space and is back to his artistic practice in Asheville.

Explore the Ceramics Studio

Located in the historic West Building, the Ceramic Studios are a multi-room complex dedicated to all our clay loving students. Featuring both a wheel throwing studio and hand-building studio, shared spaces between these classrooms include a hot box, electric kiln room, train kiln yard (soda and wood firing), and glaze room. With dedicated, professional studio staff on-hand to assist, Arrowmont is prepared to meet every knead – err need.
