Overview

In this hands-on workshop, students will discover the joy of colored clay and stoneware inlay. Students will play with different clay bodies to create lively patterns and textures and will receive step-by-step demonstrations on how to inlay multiple stoneware clays into beautifully blended slabs, as well as how to mix their own colored clay. Students will experiment with handbuilding techniques to bring their patterned slabs to life, exploring fun ways to turn these slabs into functional 3D pieces using studio molds and other building methods. This workshop is all about exploring, experimenting, and letting color, pattern, and texture spark ones imagination.

Artist Bio

Linda Hsiao

Linda Hsiao is an Altadena-based artist and designer whose work blends material curiosity with a deep appreciation for everyday objects. Born in Orange County and trained in industrial design at Pratt Institute, she spent a decade in the eyewear industry before returning to hands-on craft and discovering a renewed connection to create one-of-a-kind objects. Inspired by the landscapes of her Southern California upbringing and her life outdoors, Linda creates functional and sculptural pieces that honor natural forms, whimsey, texture, and the quiet beauty of daily rituals. In 2012, she founded Knotwork LA as the home for her evolving ceramic practice.

Explore the Ceramics Studio

Located in the historic West Building, the Ceramic Studios are a multi-room complex dedicated to all our clay loving students. Featuring both a wheel throwing studio and hand-building studio, shared spaces between these classrooms include a hot box, electric kiln room, train kiln yard (soda and wood firing), and glaze room. With dedicated, professional studio staff on-hand to assist, Arrowmont is prepared to meet every knead – err need.
