Master Woodturning: The Skew Chisel in Perspective

June 14 - 19, 2026
Intermediate
Woodturning

Overview

This comprehensive woodturning workshop focuses on mastering the Skew Chisel, one of the most beneficial tools for efficiency and finesse at the lathe. Students will gain a personalized skill set in this fine craft, developing the muscle memory and cutting execution needed for exceptional results. Students will learn to sharpen the skew effectively in a variety of ways, as well as how to modify and apply custom grinds that broaden the range of items they can turn. Instruction will cover the specific differences and advantages of various skew shapes, the contrast between cutting, shearing, and scraping surfaces, and how to practice efficiently. Key topics include understanding how body ergonomics, lathe speed, grain orientation, and tool selection affect the quality of surfaces created, ensuring students leave with a clear, functional understanding of the skew's vital role in advanced woodturning.

Artist Bio
Matt Monaco
Matt Monaco is a full-time professional woodturner operating studios in the Ozark region of Missouri. Monaco is one of a few modern traditional woodturners in America, having trained and apprenticed in the handmade trade since his youth, followed by a period as a full-time in-house woodturner at Shackleton Thomas Furniture & Pottery. His work centers on the understanding and mastery of fine form, tool control, sharpening, and cutting execution as a reflection of traditionally crafted design as fine art, resulting in tactile, sublime items created with intent and purpose. Matt currently focuses on small-batch production and fine turnings for private collections and select retail environments. He is also a Fine Woodworking Contributor & Ambassador and is dedicated to sharing his knowledge and valuing both the integrity of traditional woodturning and the promotion of diversity and mutual equity within the broader craft community.
