Woodturning

Overview

This workshop is open to all skill levels (good manual dexterity is recommended) and explores embellishment techniques that expand the visual impact of work for woodturners, furniture makers, or other wood artists. Students will learn techniques for power relief carving using a micro-motor rotary power carver, the use of woodburners for adding texture and detail, and incorporating color with acrylic paints through the dry-brush technique. Students will go step-by-step through a relief-carving process, from layout and bit selection to finishing detail on provided sample discs and blocks. This workshop is focused on off-the-lathe techniques; students will use beginning exercises to develop skills that they can incorporate into additional dry work they are encouraged to bring with them. No previous power-carving or painting experience is necessary.

Artist Bio

Dixie Biggs

Dixie Biggs is a full-time studio woodturner and artist who has been working from her Gainesville, Florida studio since 1989. Her interest in woodturning began in 1979 when she taught herself to use a wood lathe to duplicate a chess set made by her grandfather. Drawing on her biological background and a love of gardening, much of her work incorporates a botanical theme. Biggs is best known for her meticulously carved “leaf wrapped” vessels. Her work has been exhibited at notable venues such as the Smithsonian Craft Show, the Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show, and the American Craft Expo. Her pieces are included in many public and private collections worldwide. Dixie continues to share her techniques and knowledge by demonstrating and teaching at various woodturning clubs, symposia, and craft schools around the country and abroad.
