Overview

This dynamic workshop is dedicated to exploring the fun and inventive creation of toys, whirligigs, puppets, mobiles, and other articulated forms. Open to all skill levels, students will focus on transforming wood into objects with kinetic potential. This workshop will cover essential woodworking skills, including hand carving and shaping, which allow for great freedom in design. Students will learn how to implement various simple joinery and mechanisms to ensure their figures, toys, or mobiles move and interact in unique ways. The final steps will involve the effective application of color to bring these dynamic pieces to life. By the end of the week, students will have created several unique articulated wooden sculptures and gained confidence in engineering movement into their work.

Artist Bio

Andy Buck

An active maker for more than 30 years, Andy Buck creates furniture and sculpture that combine traditional craftsmanship with investigations in form, pattern, and colorful painted surfaces. Based in Upstate New York, he maintains a studio and leads the Woodworking and Furniture Design program at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Buck has exhibited his work internationally in galleries and museums in the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia, and China, and his pieces are included in both public and private collections in the U.S. and abroad.
